What is a Centrifugal Blower?

A centrifugal blower is a type of fan that uses centrifugal force to move fluids. The spiral casing on a centrifugal blower rotates at high speed with the help of a drive motor. Gas enters the casing through the inlet eye at the center and is then moved towards the discharge channel due to centrifugal force.

A centrifugal blower is a mechanical device used to move gas by applying it into a spiral casing and throwing it out through the discharge channel. Centrifugal blowers are widely used in industry for gas transfer, ventilation, drying, and other applications.

Functions of Centrifugal Blowers

Some of the main functions of centrifugal blowers include:

1. Moving Gas

The primary function of a centrifugal blower is to move gas from one place to another, such as for factory ventilation, room heating, or air flow in tunnels.

2. Increasing Gas Pressure

The high-speed rotation of the impeller causes an increase in pressure on the gas passing through the centrifugal blower casing. This high-pressure gas is then directed to the next process.

3. Regulating Gas Flow Rate

Centrifugal blowers can regulate the speed of gas flow as needed by adjusting the rotation of the drive motor. The gas flow rate is directly proportional to the impeller rotation.

Advantages of Centrifugal Blowers

Some of the main advantages of centrifugal blowers compared to other types of fans are:

1. High efficiency

2. Low maintenance costs

3. Durable

4. Low noise

5. Able to move large quantities of gas

6. Easy to adjust flow capacity and pressure

Types of Centrifugal Blowers

Some types of centrifugal blowers include:

1. Single Stage Centrifugal Blower

The simplest type with a single impeller, capable of generating pressures up to 1.5 psi.

2. Two Stage Centrifugal Blower

Uses two staged impellers to achieve 3 psi pressure.

3. Multi Stage Centrifugal Blower

Consists of more than two impellers and can generate pressures up to 15 psi.

4. Radial

Directs gas flow perpendicular from inlet to outlet. Used in systems with low static resistance.

5. Forward-Curved

Directs gas flow in a forward spiral towards the outlet. Used in systems with medium static pressure.

6. Backward-Inclined

Directs gas flow in a backward spiral. Used in systems with high resistance.

How Centrifugal Blowers Work

In general, the working principle of a centrifugal blower is as follows:

1. The drive motor rotates the shaft which is transmitted to the impeller inside the casing.

2. The high-speed rotation of the impeller creates a low-pressure area in the center. Gas around enters through the inlet eye towards this low-pressure area.

3. The shape of the impeller throws the incoming gas towards the casing wall until it reaches high speed.

4. The gas moves in a spiral between the impeller and the casing wall due to the centrifugal force caused by the impeller rotation.

5. The gas is then directed towards the outlet channel by the curved shape of the casing.

6. The gas exiting the blower has a certain pressure and velocity according to the rotation of the drive motor.

Centrifugal blowers are important equipment that utilize centrifugal force to efficiently move gas. The ability to regulate gas flow and pressure is also an added value of the application of centrifugal blowers in various industries.
